Penile Prosthesis
Interventions to restore erectile function and confidence.
Treatment of erectile dysfunction is usually initiated with medication, either orally or by injections. Penile prosthesis placement is considered a last resort or an alternative when injectable treatments are not effective.
Penile Prosthesis: Options and Procedures
Penile prostheses include two main types: malleable e hydraulicseach one with its own characteristics and benefits. The surgery to place them lasts between 2 and 3 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis, with a rest period of 5 days and sexual abstinence of approximately one month.
Malleable ProsthesesThey are flexible cylinders that keep the penis in a constant rigidity, allowing a permanent erection adjustable for the patient's comfort. They are easier to implant and require less maintenance.
Hydraulic ProsthesisThey offer a more natural appearance, as the cylinders remain flaccid at rest. Erection is achieved by activating a pump that fills the cylinders with fluid, mimicking the physiological process of the penis.
Election and Recovery
The choice of prosthesis depends on the individual needs of the patient. Factors such as comfort, level of ability to operate the prosthesis and cost are taken into account. Preoperative consultation helps to determine the most appropriate option.
Although the placement of a penile prosthesis is minimally invasive, it requires adequate postoperative care. Most patients who choose this option report high satisfaction and a significant improvement in their sex life.
